Standing at Heroes’ Square on the edge of City Park, the Museum of Fine Arts is one of Budapest’s most important art institutions. The monumental Neoclassical building was designed by Albert Schickedanz and Fülöp Ferenc Herzog, and opened in 1906.

The museum’s collection spans several millennia of European fine art: from ancient Egyptian and classical antiquities through Renaissance and Baroque masters to 19th-century painting.

Its most spectacular interior is the richly decorated Romanesque Hall, which remained inaccessible for decades. After a comprehensive restoration, it reopened in 2018, revealing a columned space that evokes the atmosphere of medieval churches.
