Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library

The central building of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library is one of the most significant historicist palaces in Budapest’s Palace Quarter.

Built at the end of the 19th century on commission from Count Frigyes Wenckheim, the residence combines a grand staircase, ornate ceilings, and richly articulated rooms in a remarkable meeting of aristocratic architecture and urban public institution.

The palace was purchased by the capital in the early 20th century, and the library’s central building opened here in 1931. The former aristocratic residence thus became a public space while preserving its representative halls and richly detailed design.

Inside, Neo-Baroque and eclectic details—stucco, gilded ornamentation, carved wood paneling, and chandeliers—still evoke the prestige of its original function, while natural light and lavish ornament continue to define the atmosphere of the interiors.
