Liberty Statue

The Liberty Statue is one of Budapest’s most iconic monuments, rising above the city on Gellért Hill. The female figure holds a palm leaf aloft, symbolizing peace and freedom.

The statue, unveiled in 1947, is the work of Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl, and originally commemorated the Soviet army as liberators after the Second World War. Its meaning shifted after the fall of communism, and is now more broadly associated with the idea of freedom. A lesser-known detail is that the sculptor’s wife, Éva Kisfaludi Strobl, served as the model for the female figure.

The monumental statue is visible from across the city and remains one of Budapest’s most prominent landmarks. The surrounding area and the nearby Citadella together form a popular viewpoint and hiking destination, offering impressive panoramic views over the Danube, the bridges, and central Pest.
