Gellért Thermal Bath
The Gellért Thermal Bath and Swimming Pool is one of Budapest’s most distinctive Art Nouveau architectural ensembles, located at the foot of Gellért Hill on the Danube embankment. The bath palace operating since 1918 was designed by Artúr Sebestyén, Ármin Hegedűs, and Izidor Sterk, reflecting the architectural ambitions of the turn of the century.
The interiors follow the visual language of Art Nouveau: Zsolnay ceramics, glass domes, and colorful mosaic surfaces define the character of the spaces. The natural light and the axially organized pool hall evoke the tradition of historic bathing culture.
The building is a defining place of Budapest’s bathing culture, where architecture and function are closely intertwined. Gellért Bath is therefore both a functioning therapeutic institution and a major work of early 20th-century Hungarian architecture.
