Elizabeth Bridge
Elizabeth Bridge is one of Budapest’s most important bridges, linking the inner city of Pest with Buda at the foot of Gellért Hill.
An ornate chain bridge once stood on the site of today’s bridge, destroyed in January 1945 during the Siege of Budapest.
The current Elizabeth Bridge was built in the 1960s in a clean modern form, sharply departing from the historicist appearance of its predecessor. Its slender structure and white color are now defining elements of Budapest’s skyline, especially in views of the city centre.
The bridge and its surroundings look different in every season and at every time of day. Sunsets, evening lights and the constantly changing urban environment continuously reshape the appearance of this elegant structure spanning the Danube.
